Granite Belt Retreat
Three guest rooms in a weatherboard house, rebuilt on a ridge after the fires.
The farmhouse on the ridge burned in the fires, along with most of the hill behind it. The owners wanted to rebuild smaller, and for guests rather than for themselves.
We kept the long, low shape of the old house: weatherboards, a pale tin roof and a row of windows along the view. Three guest rooms sit side by side, each with its own door to the yard.
In the evening the windows glow against the ridge, and guests watch the regrowth come back up the hill.

The ridge
The burnt trees still stand along the top of the hill, so we left the view to them: no garden lights, nothing on the roofline, only the windows.
